Mother & human being.

25 September 1941 – 3 September 2017

Reidun Ueland was a Norwegian psychologist from Stavanger. She lived in several places throughout her life. This is a place to remember her—as a psychologist, a mother and a human being.

A life spent meeting people

She began her career as a school psychologist in Voss, later holding the same role in Skien and Kviteseid. She continued in this work until she established Vinjetun in Åmot, Telemark, described in the source as Åmot’s first institution for people with disabilities.

As a clinical specialist, she worked extensively with people experiencing psychosis. Her answering-machine message reflected whom she wanted to make room for:

“If you are young, or you have a diagnosis of schizophrenia, you can leave a message. If not, my list is full.”

Her best-known client was Arnhild Lauveng, who later became a psychologist. Their course of therapy lasted nine years.

Her voice

Reidun was an outspoken opponent of psychiatric medication, particularly antipsychotics, which she called “chemical lobotomy”.

“On coercion in psychiatry” is a text by Reidun Ueland from 2011.

I also remember her in a short piece on Quora.

With respect

With deep respect,

Håkon Rian Mancient Ueland, son.
